Rwenzori Mountains National Park (RMNP)
Rwenzori lies a few kilometres north of the equator, rising over 400m above the floor of the Albertine Rift valley. The Nyakalengija trail head is 3kms off Kasese-Fort Portal road. Mountain climbing on the central circuit trail is a tough but rewarding expedition past the boggy vegetation and glacier peaks. Only experienced hikers are recommended to attempt high peaks.
The best periods to visit the park are in the dry seasons of December to February and June to August. While on the central circuit, there are basic traditional huts .There is also a hostel and campsite at Nyakalengija, mid range hotel and several budget lodgings at nearby Kasese town. The visitor is advised to carry; sleeping bag, rain gear, good hiking shoes, crampons, gloves, and your own food.

The (5,119 m) high, snow covered Rwenzori Mountains landscape is characterized by huge plants, rivers and streams, moors, lakes, peaks and glaciers. The Rwenzori host a thick vegetation region of 15 meter long huge lobelias, 10 meter long tree heather, a thick carpet of moss, lichen, wild flowers and ferns thrive well here in a very high humidity
The Rwenzori mountains has many peaks above the snow area; one of them is the Margherita with 5.109 m being the third highest peak in the continent after the Kilimanjaro (5.895 m) and Mount Kenya (5.199 m).
The starting point to climb the Rwenzori on the central circuit is the Nyakalengija village, about 20 km from Kasese town. The 10 km hike from Nyakalengija brings you to the Nyabitaba hut at 2.650 Metres.
